CE Event Recap: Retinal Holes, Tears, and Detachments
On August 20, 2024, Retina Consultants of Texas presented a virtual CE webinar entitled “Retinal Holes, Tears, Lattice, other Peripheral Diseases and Retinal Detachments.” Hosted by Dr. James C. Major, the webinar was split into two presentations by Dr. Christa D. Soekamto and Dr. William A. Pearce.
Dr. Soekamto’s Presentation: Retinal Holes, Tears, and Detachments
Dr. Soekamto kicked things off with a comprehensive presentation about various peripheral diseases, focusing on the pathology behind the diseases. She discussed many conditions and their treatment needs, including lattice degeneration, atrophic holes, operculated holes, retinoschisis, retinal detachment, and horseshoe tears. She also reviewed the advantages and limitations of laser and cryotherapy. She finished her presentation by talking about posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and how symptomatic cases increase the risk of developing a retinal tear by 20%.
Dr. Pearce’s Presentation: Retinal Detachment
Dr. Pearce began his presentation by giving an overview of the different types of retinal detachment, discussing rhegmatogenous, traction, and exudative/hemorrhagic retinal detachments, and explaining how they differ from one another. Using several retinal detachment cases that he had treated, as well as several surgical videos, he then discussed the various treatment options available, including laser therapy, pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckle, and vitrectomy.
