He is a nationally recognized vitreoretinal specialist and is well known in the area of research and treatment of opportunistic infections of the eye, in addition to being a scientific reviewer for two major ophthalmic journals. Dr. Gary Lane is a board-certified Ophthalmologist, specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina. He was born and raised in Miami, FL. Dr. Calvin Mein is a board-certified Ophthalmologist with fellowship training in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous. Upon completion of a twenty-year Army career, he retired and founded Retinal Consultants of San Antonio in 1991. Dr. Amy Schefler is a board-certified ocular oncologist and vitreoretinal surgeon at Retina Consultants of Texas. She has a special expertise in eye cancer, a rare subspecialty within ophthalmology. Dr. Schefler is an Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College/Houston Methodist Hospital and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Charles C. Wykoff is a board-certified Medical and Surgical Retina Specialist and ophthalmologist with Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX). Leading a top international research facility for vitreoretinal diseases, Dr. Wykoff serves as Director of Research at RCTX and the Greater Houston Retina Research Foundation (GHRRF), and Chairman of the Research and Clinical Trials Subcommittee, Retina Consultants of America. The selection process for "Super Doctors" involves a rigorous evaluation designed to identify healthcare professionals who have amassed notable achievements and garnered respect from their peers. Candidates are initially nominated by their colleagues or identified by the diligent Super Doctors research team.
Evaluation is based on ten key factors:
- Years of experience
- Hospital appointments
- Fellowships
- Professional activities
- Leadership positions
- Academic achievements/positions
- Board certifications
- Publications, lectures, and presentations
- Honors and awards
- Other outstanding achievements
Following this, a meticulous specialty-specific assessment called the “Blue Ribbon Panel Review” takes place. During this phase, doctors with the highest scores are selected to serve as panelists and carefully review the nominees within their respective fields. Points are assigned based on nominations, research findings, and the outcomes of the Blue Ribbon Panel Review. Ultimately, only the top 5% of doctors within a specific region are bestowed with the esteemed title of “Super Doctors.”
