RCTX Spotlight: Get to Know Dr. Christa D. Soekamto
At Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX), we understand how important it is for you and your family to feel comfortable with your providers. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the newest doctors to join our team of renowned retinal experts – Christa D. Soekamto, M.D. An ophthalmologist with fellowship training in retina surgery, Dr. Soekamto provides exceptional care to patients in our San Antonio locations.
Meet Dr. Soekamto
A native of Grapevine, Texas, Dr. Soekamto is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in retinal diseases. She treats conditions such as retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.
Dr. Soekamto’s Educational Journey
Dr. Soekamto attended Southeast Missouri State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. During this period, she also competed in collegiate NCAA Division I gymnastics. Following this, she attended Texas Tech University Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, serving as chief resident. Her two-year surgical retina fellowship was completed at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Dr. Soekamto enjoyed working within the San Antonio community so much that she decided to stay and practice locally. An adjunct professor at UT Health San Antonio, she teaches ophthalmology residents and fellows about retinal diseases. She holds memberships in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Specialists, and Women in Ophthalmology.
A Passion For Retinal Surgery
As to what led her to her current role, Dr. Soekamto says, “I was in my trauma surgery rotation … I saw that the ophthalmologist was operating, so I asked to join him. I saw him explore an eye that had a suspected ruptured globe, and I looked through the microscope, and I thought that was the coolest thing ever.” She continues, “He let me actually suture under the microscope, which was just a thrilling experience for me. Once I started my fellowship training, and I got to do surgery and all the laser procedures and injections, I absolutely fell in love, and I have never looked back.”
Dr. Soekamto is an avid foodie and traveler who enjoys exercising, including kayaking and snorkeling, as well as spending time with family and friends. In the clinic, she is passionate about always putting her patients first. “You know, you do a lot for your patients. But at the end of the day, you do everything you can to help improve their vision, and you’re with them every step of the way. It can be a very gratifying field to be in.”
