The Subspecialties of RCTX
Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is not your ordinary retina practice. Specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina, vitreous, and macula, RCTX stands out as the largest retina-only ophthalmology practice in Texas and one of the most respected in the United States.
What sets RCTX apart is not just our commitment to providing world-class expertise in the medical and surgical care of retinal diseases, but also our dedication to advancing patient care through cutting-edge research conducted through the Texas Retina Research Foundation, one of the nation’s leading sites for retinal research. In addition to boasting a large team of retina specialists, surgeons, and researchers, RCTX also employs several physicians with uncommon ophthalmology subspecialties.
RCTX Subspecialty Highlight: Uveitis
One of these subspecialties is a uveitis-only clinic, led by Dr. Kelly Larkin, an Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Specialist. Uveitis refers to the inflammation of the middle part of the eye, known as the uvea, and can manifest in various forms depending on the affected area. Dr. Larkin's advanced training in ocular immunology distinguishes her expertise in caring for patients with damaging inflammatory eye diseases.
Dr. Larkin’s dedicated uveitis-only clinic is located at RCTX's flagship retina center in Bellaire, TX. “RCTX combines the best of both worlds,” says Dr. Larkin. “You have the efficiency and support of a very well-run private practice, but you also have a world-class, top-notch research center. When you combine those two things, it’s almost like a hybrid between a private practice and an academic center.” Dr. Larkin and her team ensure that patients with uveitis receive personalized attention, as well as access to the latest research and treatments.
In addition to Dr. Larkin, Dr. Christopher Henry and Dr. Rosa Kim also see patients for uveitis.
RCTX Subspecialty Highlight: Ocular Oncology
Another notable subspecialty at RCTX is our Ocular Oncology program, led by Dr. Amy Schefler. Ocular oncology focuses on providing medical and surgical care to patients with ocular cancers, including intraocular tumors, metastatic cancers, and tumors on the surface of the eye. Dr. Schefler's expertise lies in treating a wide range of cancerous conditions within the eye, both in children and adults.
As a renowned researcher in eye cancer, Dr. Schefler has made significant contributions to the field through numerous publications and presentations. She has built one of the busiest eye cancer centers in the nation, collaborating with experts in radiation oncology, medical oncology, pediatric oncology, ophthalmic pathology, and basic science research. By participating in cutting-edge clinical trials and providing access to the latest treatments, RCTX ensures that patients receive the best care available for eye cancer.
RCTX Subspecialty Highlight: Inherited Retinal Diseases & Gene Therapy
Inherited retinal diseases and gene therapy represent an exciting subfield within ophthalmology, and RCTX is at the forefront of advancements in this area. Dr. Kenneth Fan, one of our newest physicians, specializes in inherited retinal diseases and gene therapy, contributing significantly to RCTX's research endeavors. Inherited retinal diseases are a rare group of disorders caused by genetic mutations that can result in severe vision loss and even blindness.
Much of Dr. Fan’s research with RCTX focuses on the groundbreaking nature of gene therapy in treating inherited retinal diseases, where modifications are made to the genes in the cells or body. RCTX's focus on research and clinical trials allows patients to benefit from the latest discoveries in treatment options.
