CE Event Recap: Uveitis Cases

On March 2, 2023, Retina Consultants of Texas hosted an engaging CE event focusing on the diagnosis and management of uveitis. Dr. Kelly Larkin, a renowned uveitis specialist, guided the session, covering essential topics such as anatomic classification, assessment, diagnostic work-up, and treatment options for uveitis, as well as discussing real clinical cases.
Uveitis Assessment and Treatment
Dr. Larkin began by highlighting the importance of a comprehensive assessment for effective diagnosis and treatment planning, focusing on how to take a careful history when uveitis is suspected. This included understanding the symptoms in terms of the patient’s experience, noting the frequency and nature of flares, and a review of other systems to consider possible rheumatologic factors. She also emphasized the importance of building a differential diagnosis when assessing uveitis, including autoimmune, infectious, and masquerade conditions.
From there, Dr. Larkin explored various treatment strategies:
- Noninfectious Uveitis: Treatment is determined by the anatomic location and severity of the disease.
- Infectious Uveitis: Emphasis on identifying the underlying organism and selecting an appropriate antimicrobial treatment.
She also detailed the various therapeutic approaches, including oral, topical, and injectable treatments, while providing insight into her decision-making process for selecting the best treatment.
Dr. Larkin concluded the session by presenting several fascinating uveitis cases she has treated at her clinic, showcasing the complexities and challenges of managing this disease in a real-world setting. These cases provided valuable learning experiences for attendees, emphasizing the need for a thorough assessment and individualized treatment plans.
