CE Event Recap: Secondary Lenses
On November 14, 2024, Retina Consultants of Texas hosted a CE event focused on Secondary Lenses. This was the first time this topic was covered in our CE series, providing an in-depth look at dislocated intraocular lenses (IOLs), diagnostic processes, and advanced surgical techniques.
Dr. Effie Rahman – Understanding and Managing Dislocated IOLs
Dr. Effie Rahman began the session with a comprehensive discussion of dislocated IOLs, detailing symptoms and exam findings. She also walked through the diagnostic process within the context of full eye anatomy and the distinction between dislocated and displaced lenses. Dr. Rahman concluded her presentation by discussing both non-surgical and surgical treatment options, providing an overview of the criteria for determining surgical candidacy, as well as an overview of surgical techniques, including post-operative appearances.
Dr. Ankoor Shah – Innovations in IOL Management
Dr. Ankoor Shah built on the foundation set by Dr. Rahman, presenting the latest innovations in IOL management. He reviewed several studies to explore which surgical techniques provided better outcomes for IOL patients, touching on factors such as sutured versus sutureless fixation and gas cohorts versus no gas cohorts. Dr. Shah concluded by emphasizing the importance of:
- Staying up-to-date with evolving surgical techniques
- Understanding why surgeries may need to be performed in stages rather than simultaneously
- Providing clear, consistent messaging to patients to manage expectations and ensure understanding of their treatment plans
