Overview
Joseph S. Christiansen, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in the medical and surgical management of diseases of the retina and vitreous. He joined Retina Consultants of Texas after spending fifteen years as an active-duty medical corps officer in the United States Army. He spent his last five years of active-duty service as the director of the retina department at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX where he served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences helping to train the next generation of ophthalmologists. He is proud to continue his military service as a Reserve officer in the Army.

Education and Training
Dr. Christiansen completed his undergraduate education at Brigham Young University. After graduation, he commissioned as an officer in the United States Army and completed medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He completed his internship and residency training in ophthalmology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Following his residency, Dr. Christiansen spent four years serving as a comprehensive ophthalmologist for the Army at Ft. Sill, OK. He was then privileged to complete fellowship training in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

His areas of clinical and surgical interest include ocular trauma, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, and secondary intraocular lens implantation.
Personal
Dr. Christiansen loves to spend his free time with his wife and children. He enjoys many sports and loves nothing more than spending a weekend on the sidelines of his children’s sporting events. He and his family also love to travel and experience different cultures through food and local traditions. He lived in South Korea for two years as a missionary and speaks conversational Korean.
