Dr. Sagar B. Patel is a board-certified medical and surgical retina specialist with Retina Consultants of Texas. After completing extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of various vitreoretinal diseases, Dr. Patel is excited to practice in his hometown of Houston, Texas and provide compassionate, skilled, and cutting-edge medical and surgical retina care for patients. Dr. Patel specializes predominantly in adult medical and vitreoretinal surgery. Utilizing cutting-edge imaging, diagnostic acumen, and physical examination skills, he is able to precisely diagnose and treat a number of vitreoretinal eye conditions. His surgical interests include retinal detachments, diabetic diseases, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and secondary intraocular lens implants. His research interests include diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, age-related macular degeneration, and surgical diseases of the retinal and vitreous.
Education and Training
Dr. Patel received a B.S. degree in Human Biology from The University of Texas at Austin went on to receive his M.D. from The University of Texas at Southwestern where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed Ophthalmology Residency at The University of Texas at Southwestern and subsequently, a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at The University of Southern California Roski Eye Institute and Retina-Vitreous Associate where he served as chief fellow.
Dr. Patel is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has published multiple peer-review articles, and he has presented at several national conferences. Dr. Patel continues to have a very active role in clinical vitreoretinal research at RCTX.
He has trained at numerous highly ranked hospital systems, including Parkland Hospital, John Peter Smith Hospital, LA County-USC, North Texas VA, UT Southwestern, Roski Eye Institute, Children’s Hospital of LA, and the Retina-Vitreous Associates has given him an exposure to diverse patient populations and a strong foundation in the diagnosis and management of many vitreoretinal subspecialty areas.
Personal
In his free time, Dr. Patel enjoys traveling, reading books, hiking, and spending time with his friends and family. He also has a passion for international medicine and has worked previously in Haiti, Panama, Mexico, Guatemala, and India on medical mission trips.
